Financial Highlights
In fiscal 2009, the fiscal year ended March 31, 2010, results were boosted by firm sales of CMOS image sensors used in digital still cameras and mobile phones as well as image correction ICs for liquid crystal TVs and contributions from PTT Co., Ltd., a company included in the Group’s scope of consolidation as a consolidated subsidiary from the end of the previous fiscal year. Taking into account each of the aforementioned factors, sales in the fiscal year under review climbed 12.0% year on year to ¥121,782 million. On a geographic basis, sales in Japan totaled ¥89,966 million, up 9.8% compared with the previous fiscal year, ¥31,518 million in Asia, an increase of 19.0%, and ¥297 million in other regions, 9.9% higher than the previous fiscal year. From a profit perspective, ordinary income jumped 161.0% year on year to ¥1,275 million while net income amounted to ¥1,043 million compared with a net loss of ¥513 million in the previous fiscal year.
Future Prospects and Initiatives
Looking at Japan’s future, high rates of economic growth in newly emerging countries including China is expected to support the domestic economy. Buoyed by an increase in export activity and the positive effects of pump-priming measures implemented by the government, production and corporate-sector earnings are also expected to improve. Taking into consideration the aforementioned factors, signs that the drop in capital investment and employment conditions have bottomed out are beginning to emerge. With a hint that personal consumption is on the upswing, expectations are for the recent modest recovery to continue. With respect to the electronics, information and communication fields, areas in which the Vitec Group is particularly active, signs are also becoming increasingly evident of a positive turnaround in market conditions on the back of an upswing in production in newly developing countries. Under these circumstances, the Vitec Group will work diligently to expand its business domain through the activities of such Group companies as PTT and the newly established Enervic, a company engaged in eco-related endeavors. At the same time, we will strive to maximize sales and profits by further increasing management and operating efficiency through such measures as the merger of Infonics Co., Ltd. during the previous fiscal year and bolstering the Group’s collective strengths.
(1) Improve the Group’s business structure balance
The Vitec Group will look toward maximizing sales and profits by expanding sales and marketing opportunities. At the same time, steps will be taken to improve the balance of its operating activities by implementing appropriate business structural reforms (Increase suppliers, purchasers and markets; expand overseas sales and purchases).
(2) Maximize sales and profits by bolstering the collective strength of the Vitec Group
In addition to the marketing of mainstay Sony devices, we will place considerable emphasis on promoting sales both individually and on a Group basis of products made by major overseas manufacturers including NXP Semiconductors N.V. and Samsung Mobile Display Co., Ltd. In bolstering the collective strength of the Group, we will maximize consolidated sales and profits. As a part of efforts to lift the Group’s overall profit margins, we will actively develop and market the value-added capabilities of our Solution/Technical Support Business as well as Measuring Instruments Business. Furthermore, every effort will be made to increase sales to industrial instrument and IT-related customers. On a collective basis, we will endeavor to uncover new commercial products and to cultivate new customers.
(3) Enhance customer satisfaction
Channeling our energies toward enhancing customer satisfaction, we will reinforce our customer-centric sales and marketing structure, improve management and operating quality in accordance with ISO standards and guidelines and engage in environmentally conscious business activities.
(4) Improve our technological strength
The Vitec Group will further raise the level of the core capabilities offered by its technical support company Vitec System Engineering. We will also enhance the Group’s total solution services by improving technical support capabilities in the four categories of device design support, set design support, technological application and solution promotion.
(5) Strengthen our management infrastructure
Adhering strictly to the keywords “profit and risk management,” we will reinforce our capital base, improve the quality of internal governance and strengthen our management infrastructure including each of the personnel, information infrastructure and logistics frameworks by implementing appropriate structural reforms.
